Shayka, Sobel Explode for Career Highs in Kills in Loss at Mount Olive, 3-1

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- Juniors John Sobel and Mark Shayka set career highs in kills, but the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team was upended by Mount Olive, 21-25, 16-25, 29-27, 20-25, in Conference Carolinas play Friday evening at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.

The Trojans (6-3, 5-2 CC) swung .300 or better in the final three sets, including a match-high .619 in the fourth. The Bobcats (0-10, 0-8) amassed 15 block assists and a solo block.

Sobel (Holbrook, N.Y.) continued his impressive by setting a career-high with 24 kills while Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) caught a nice groove and bashed out 17.

UMO took an 8-2 lead in the first after shaky offense from the Bobcats, however, freshman Hector Serviat (Miami, Fla.) notched an ace following a Sobel kill to cut the deficit to four.

Sobel contributed a pair of kills and consecutive aces as part of a 5-0 run.

LMC's Shayka and Rudy Klaas (Dakar, Senegal) stuffed a Robert Poole attack to make it 18-17.

The Trojans staved off the comeback attempt thanks to an ace from Jeff Yasalonis.

Klaas climbed the net with Serviat to block a Yasalonis attempt while UMO clung to a 9-7 lead.

The home squad stretched the lead to 22-13 after back-to-back blocks from the duo of Peyton Schirman and Alex Palmatier.

UMO claimed the set after a Bobcat service error.

Neither squad would lead by more than four in the third.

Shayka smashed a kill, giving LMC the 12-8 lead.

The Trojans responded with a 6-1 run.

UMO fended off set point on multiple occasions, but a service error and another Shayka kill gave LMC the set.

Tied at eight, the Trojans produced an 8-3 run to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Sobel contributed his final kill of the night to cut the deficit to three, 23-20. UMO took the next two points to win the match.

Serviat and Klaas tallied four block assists apiece while senior Drew Blecher (York, Pa.) dished out 44 assists.

LMC returns to action Saturday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. when it travels to Barton in Wilson, N.C.
