Men's Volleyball Loses Conference Tilt at Barton

WILSON, N.C. --- Junior Mark Shayka turned in a match-high 12 kills and freshman Levi Gifford amassed four block assists, but the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team was swept at Barton, 22-25, 14-25, 19-25, in a Conference Carolinas match Saturday morning at Wilson Gymnasium in Wilson, N.C.

The Bulldogs (9-3, 6-2 CC) swung .333 as a group while Kekaulike Alameda turned in 10 digs. The Bobcats (0-11, 0-9) saw senior Drew Blecher (York, Pa.) dish out 28 assists.

LMC rallied out of a four-point, twice, early in the first set.

Trailing 10-6, junior John Sobel (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Gifford (Virginia Beach, Va.) stuffed a Vasilis Mandilaris attack before Sobel notched a kill to tie it at 10.

Sobel finished the contest with nine kills.

The set would become a see-saw battle until freshman Hector Serviat (Miami, Fla.) put the Bobcats up 21-20.

BC responded with a 5-1 run to rally back to win the opener.

The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire in the second while swinging at a .476 clip.

Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) and Sobel did most of the offensive damage in the third despite trailing 19-17.

BC ripped off a 4-0 run to push the lead to six, 23-17.

Shayka delivered a kill before he and Gifford earned a block, 23-19.

BC's Michael Perez used consecutive kills to conclude play.

Junior Keenan Freitas (Hilo, Hawaii) led the team with five digs.

The Bobcats wrap up a nine-match road swing with a trip to Pfeiffer Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in Misenheimer, N.C.
