Sobel, Freitas Record Double-Doubles; Bobcats Drop See-Saw Battle With Alderson Broaddus, 3-2

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Juniors John Sobel and Keenan Freitas notched double-doubles, but the Lees-McRae men's volleyball fell in a five-set heartbreaker, 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 11-15, to Alderson Broaddus Friday evening at Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.

The Battlers' (4-5) Myles Miller was dominate with 14 block assists while Obenda Besongngem amassed 21 kills. The Bobcats (0-13) held the opposition to a .070 clip, including three sets of .000.

Three different LMC players recorded double-digit kills, led by 21 from Sobel (Holbrook, N.Y.)

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 5-0 lead following a block from Rudy Klaas (Dakar, Senegal) and Drew Blecher (York, Pa.).

Blecher turned in four block assists while dishing out 44 assists.

Freitas (Hilo, Hawaii) notched one of his 10 kills to give LMC its largest lead of the set, 22-14.

ABU used a 6-1 run to cut the deficit to three, 23-20.

Freitas delivered one of his three aces to halt the rally while the home team took the set.

The junior led the team with 13 digs.

The Bobcats were resilient in the second and ripped off a 7-0 run, sparked by two block assists from freshman Levi Gifford (Virginia Beach, Va.), to climb out of a 14-9 hole.

LMC took the momentum and the second set after a Sobel kill.

The Battlers' Benjamin Bravo and Miller played aggressive at the net and earned a pair of block assists, staking ABU to a 15-12 lead.

Junior Mark Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) bashed out consecutive kills to cut the deficit to one, 22-21.

ABU claimed the next three points to win the set.

Shayka duplicated his third-set success while tying the fourth at 10.

The Battlers used a 15-9 run to force a decisive fifth.

Klaas and Blecher combined for another block in the final set, but LMC trailed 8-6.

ABU never relinquished the lead and earned the win with back-to-back block assists from Miller.

Sophomore Dominick Hamilton (Naples, Fla.) impressed defensively with 11 digs. Sobel finished with 11 digs as well.

The Bobcats travel to Coker Friday, March 4 at 5 p.m. in Hartsville, S.C.
