BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Juniors John Sobel and Mark Shayka combined for 25 kills and the team amassed 12 services aces while handling Bluefield, 25-19, 25-12, 17-25, 25-16, Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.

The Bobcats (1-17) earned their first win of the season by holding the opposition to a -.028 clip on the day. The Rams (3-12) struggled all day and failed to amass more than six kills in any set.

Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) and senior Drew Blecher (York, Pa.) dominated from the service line while delivering four aces apiece.

Blecher led all players with 40 assists.

Coach Henry Chuang's squad jumped out to a 6-2 advantage after three different Bobcats recorded a kill and Shayka and freshman Jack Frank (Tampa, Fla.) turned in aces.

BC cut the deficit to three after a Chad Hamby kill, but LMC responded with a 6-1 run, provoked by two kills from Sobel, to push the lead to eight, 18-10.

Sobel led all players with 15 kills while Shayka contributed 10.

Frank registered one of his seven kills before a BC service error concluded the first set.

The Bobcats tallied three more aces to start the second while jumping out to a 5-1 lead.

Blecher added two of his own while LMC built a healthy 21-8 advantage.

Freshman Hector Serviat (Miami, Fla.) joined the action with a pair of kills late while the Bobcats cruised through the second.

The Rams recorded only one kill and swung at a match-worst -.267 clip.

BC grabbed a 13-8 lead in the third despite sloppy play from both sides.

Sobel and Shayka used consecutive kills to cut the deficit to three, 13-10.

Hamby and Chase Craycraft used a pair of block assists and a Lesharo Clark kill to claim the third.

The fourth was a see-saw battle while a trio of Bobcat errors allowed BC to trail 13-12.

LMC clamped down and ripped off a 12-4 run, powered by strong play from Rudy Klaas (Dakar, Senegal) and two aces from Blecher.

The Bobcats impressed with a .438 clip.

LMC welcomes Erskine Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. for a Conference Carolinas match in Williams Gymnasium.
