CHARLESTON, W.V. – The University of Charleston (W.V.) swept the Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team (27-25, 25-22, 25-18) Saturday afternoon in non-conference play. LMC's record drops to 2-2 with the loss, while the Golden Eagles improved to 3-2 with the win.
Lees-McRae got out to a four-point lead (7-3) in the opening set, but the Golden Eagles scored eight of the next nine points to take the lead, 11-8. The two teams battled over the remainder of the first frame with the score tied at eight different points. One of those ties was at 25-25 before the Golden Eagles scored back-to-back points to finish off the first stanza, 27-25.
The Bobcats put together their best offensive performance in the second set hitting a match-high .235 as a team. Five different LMC players notched kills in the frame with John Sobel and Wes Rogman leading the way with four kills each. Despite the varied offense by Lees-McRae, Charleston scored four of the last five points in the second to turn a 21-21 tie into a 25-22 set victory for the Golden Eagles.
LMC struggled with miscues in the third set as it committed 16 errors total with attack, service and receive errors. Those mistakes by the Bobcats were too much for them to overcome as the Golden Eagles finished off the match with a 25-18 victory.
Reto Pfund notched the first double-double of his collegiate career with 29 assists and 14 digs to lead Lees-McRae. Pfund was not the only player to reach double figures in digs as senior Keenan Freitas totaled a season-high 17 digs.
LMC will open its Conference Carolinas schedule Wednesday when it hosts King (TN) inside Williams Gymnasium. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
