MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team snapped a four-match losing skid with a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-16, 25-22) of Pfeiffer Saturday afternoon. The victory moves LMC's record to 6-13 overall and 4-7 in league play. Additionally, with the win it marks the first time since 2011 that the Bobcats have won the season series from Pfeiffer.
Set 1: After exchanging the first 10 points of the first set, the Bobcats took the lead with a kill from John Sobel to make it 6-5. Following the kill by Sobel, LMC never trailed as it went on to win the first frame, 25-18. The trio of Sobel, Karl Deichmann and Mark Shayka combined for 10 kills on 17 attempts to lead Lees-McRae's offense.
Set 2: LMC dominated the second set not only offensively but also defensively. The Bobcats hit a match-high .464 on 28 attempts and also notched three total blocks in the second. Due to the complete effort from Lees-McRae, it won its second straight set, 25-16, over the Falcons.
Set 3: Pfeiffer put together its strongest effort of the match in the third as it was within one point of LMC as late as 21-20. Despite the improved play by the Falcons, the Bobcats closed out the frame on a 4-2 run to finish off the sweep, 25-22.
Stat Leaders:Wes Rogman and Shayka ended up leading LMC with 11 kills Saturday. Setting up Rogman and Shayka most of the time was Reto Pfund who finished with 37 assists. Defensively, Rogman paced the team with seven digs and Rudy Klass led LMC on the block with a solo block and a pair of block assists.
Next Up: LMC will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Belmont Abbey at Banner Elk Elementary School. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
