BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team closed out its 2018 regular season on a high note as it picked up a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 27-25, 25-17) of conference rival Erskine Friday night at Williams Gymnasium. With the win, LMC's record improves to 4-21 this spring and 2-14 within conference play.
Set 1 – The opening set of Friday's contest was definitely a nail-biter. LMC and Erskine were tied at 14 different points in the first stanza, including at 24-24. However, the Bobcats got a couple key points thanks to Robert Bowling and Ethan Gardner to help lift the team to a first set win, 26-24. Not only did the duo score the last two points for the team, they also had stellar performances in the first in general. Gardner posted a kill in each of the three attacks he attempted, while Bowling added three kills on five attempts.
Set 2 – Lees-McRae began the second set well as it got out to a five-point lead at 18-13. After a timeout by Erskine, however, the Flying Fleet reeled off five straight points to tie the score at 18. The two squads jostled with the lead for the final few points of the frame until LMC tallied back-to-back points again to close out the set, 27-25.
Set 3 – In its most dominating performance of the night, LMC hit .429 as a team in 14 attacks and forced the Flying Fleet to hit -.174 in the third on its way to a commanding 25-17 win in the third to seal the sweep.
Next Up – The Bobcats will open the Conference Carolinas men's volleyball tournament next Tuesday. LMC, which is the No. 8 seed for the tournament, will visit top-seed and Co-Conference Carolinas regular season champion King University in the first round. First serve between the Tornado and Bobcats is set for 6:30 p.m.
