BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team picked up its first victory of the 2019 season Tuesday night at Williams Gymnasium as it defeated Bluefield College in three sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-15). The win evens Lees-McRae's record at 1-1 on the season.
Set 1 – The opening set of Tuesday's match was a highly contested one. The Rams and Bobcats were knotted at 19-19 late in the frame. Lees-McRae, however, went on a quick 3-0 run to gain the lead for good as it went on to win the first, 25-22. Five different Bobcats notched a kill in the first stanza.
Set 2 – Bluefield struggled to get its offense clicking in the second frame. As a team, the Rams hit -.200 in the second with four kills compared to eight errors on 20 attacks. Lees-McRae, meanwhile, combined to hit .333 in the frame after scoring 10 of the first 11 points in the set. The dominance by the Bobcats resulted in a 25-14 win.
Set 3 – Lees-McRae kept things rolling in the third scoring four of the first five points of the set. Bluefield kept its deficit to right around four or five points for the majority of the frame before the Bobcats went on a 6-1 run to close out the set and match, 25-15.
Stat Standouts – Every Bobcat that suited up and played Tuesday seemed to have a successful day statistically. Hector Serviat led the team with eight kills, while Ethan Gardner, Drew Sims, Isaac Reed and Tyler Dorfman all had five or more kills. Defensively, Sims led the way on the block with three total blocks, and Chris Woolslayer paced the team with seven digs.
Next Up – The Bobcats will be back in action Friday night when they hit the road for the first time this season when they visit Queens University of Charlotte. First serve between the Bobcats and Royals is set for 7 p.m.
