BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team battled but fell to Emmanuel (GA) College in three sets (25-19, 27-25, 25-21) Friday night at Williams Gymnasium.
Set 1 – Emmanuel came out of the gates hot on Friday night. The Lions not only attacked well (.524 hitting percentage) but they also played well defensively totaling five blocks in the frame. With both sides of the ball working in Emmanuel's favor, it led by as many as six points in the first set which proved to be the winning margin, 25-19.
Set 2 – The second stanza was a little bit more of a back-and-forth one than the first. First, Lees-McRae jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after a Lion service error and an ace from Nick Cookingham. Emmanuel would rally to tie the score at seven before surging ahead by four at 12-8. Credit to the Bobcats as they clawed back to tie the score at 22 a side with a kill from Hector Serviat. Lees-McRae and Emmanuel would be tied at 23, 24 and 25 before the Lions scored back-to-back points to take the frame, 27-25.
Set 3 – The third and final set Friday was a much like the second frame where there was not a ton of separation between the two teams. Emmanuel finished the third set with 14 kills but the Bobcats matched them with 14 of their own. The difference came on the block as the Lions out-blocked Lees-McRae four to one in the third frame, which accounted for nearly all of Emmanuel's winning margin, 25-21.
Stat standouts – The Bobcats were led Friday by Tyler Dorfman. Dorfman totaled a career-high 12 kills in 18 attacks on the night with just three errors for a .500 hitting percentage. Defensively, Chris Woolslayer paced Lees-McRae totaling eight digs on the night.
Next up – Lees-McRae will have a short turnaround as it takes on Erskine Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium. First serve between the Bobcats and Flying Fleet is set for 2 p.m.
