Newton, NC-- The men's cross country team at Lees-McRae College finished second at the Lenior-Rhyne College Invitational this past Friday at Southside Park in Newton, NC. The 40-41 margin made the 9 team race even more exciting.
The Bobcats top 7 ran within a 1:14 split as freshman Chris Holstein (Middleburg, FL) led the way with a personal best time of 27:43 over the 8k (five-mile course) as he finished 4th out of 65 runners. Jon Bernal (Oakton, VA) also had a personal best time of 28:08 as he finished 7th overall.
Cody Beaman (Humble, TX), Josh Blanc (Hope Mills, NC), Adam Kovaly (Alpharetta, GA) also had personal best times as they finished 9-10-11 in the race. Uriel Alberto (Winston-Salem) continued to drop his 8k times as he finished with a mark of 30:06 as he has dropped 1 minute off of his time each race this year.
"I think we are starting to realize our potential and what we are capable of doing, we just need to understand pace over a long distance race," said Coach Craig McPhail. "With so many freshmen, understanding how to make a 5-mile race a fast one can be difficult, but we are getting there and this is a fun team to watch."
Next up will be The Citadel Invite at James Island County Park Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
