Banner Elk, NC--The 9th annual Bobcat Invitational Cross Country meet was held Saturday, October 7th on the campus of Lees-McRae College. In the men's race several teams cancelled due to weather, sicknesses, and injuries thus leaving turning it into a Bobcat White vs. Yellow meet with several unattached athletes competing as well.
The 4-mile course was hilly and muddy, giving the athletes the true sense of cross country.
The white squad led by Chris Holstein's (Middleburg, FL) 2nd place finish beat the yellow team 30-32.
Jon Bernal (Oakton, VA) was battling a cold, represented the yellow team as their highest place finisher as he came in 5th, followed closely by teammate Jose Chavira (Smithfield, NC).
Red-shirt junior Lewis Martin (Charlottesville, VA) used the course as a tempo run and cruised to the victory in a time of 22:04.
"We are battling colds and I thought we came out and had fun in a competitive fashion," said Coach Craig McPhail. "For the purpose of the meet, to run in front of our friends, classmates, professors and family I am pleased with the overall performances."
"Chris made a move late in the race and separated himself from the rest, and I was glad to see this as he is continuing to learn about pace and distance, but his self-confidence levels are high from this performance."
Next up for the Bobcats will be the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Championships held in Spartanburg, SC at Milliken Park, Saturday October 21st, with the men running at 8:45 a.m.
