CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Craig Simpkins (Boiling Springs, N.C.) placed sixth to pace four top-20 finishers for the Lees-McRae College men's cross country team, as the Bobcats turned in a third-place showing at the 2010 Conference Carolinas Championships Friday.
Lees-McRae posted five top-25 finishes to place third with 72 points, while Queens University of Charlotte nabbed each of the top five spots to record the best possible score of 15 and capture the team championship. Mount Olive College finished second with 58 points, followed by Lees-McRae, Belmont Abbey College (131) and St. Andrews Presbyterian (177).
Simpkins turned in a time of 25:19.1 to record his fourth top-10 finish of the season, and earn a spot on the all-Conference Carolinas Second Team. Michael Davis (Independence, Va.) and Sondre Thorbergsen (Tranoy, Norway) posted times of 26:24.5 and 26:24.9 to finish 13th and 14th, respectively, to each garner all-Conference Carolinas Second Team recognition.
Austin High (Chesnee, S.C.) placed 18th with a time of 27 minutes flat, while Jared Lupton (Nampa, Idaho) finished just outside the top 20 in 21st place with a time of 27:15.9. Will McCoy (Southern Pines, N.C.) and Conner Gray (Christiansburg, Va.) placed 33rd and 35th, respectively, with times of 28:21.5 and 28:26.9. Jordan Gillespie (Fries, Va.) and Doni McCarty (Bluff City, Tenn.) rounded out the Bobcat finishers in 47th and 51st place, respectively.
Lees-McRae returns to the course on Nov. 20 when the Bobcats travel to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championships.
