Simpkins, Thorbergsen earn USTFCCCA all-Academic honors

NEW ORLEANS --- Craig Simpkins (Boiling Springs, S.C.) and Sondre Thorbergsen (Tranoy, Norway) have been named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-Academic Team, announced UTSFCCCA officials Monday.

Simpkins capped a fantastic season with a 21st-place showing at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championships, fresh off a career-best and school-record time of 25:19 at the conference championships, which earned him a sixth-place finish and a spot on the all-Conference Carolinas Second Team. The all-Conference Carolinas Academic Team selection recorded four top-10 finishes this season, including a third-place showing at the Stampede at the Shoals in September.

Thorbergsen notched a pair of top-10 finishes this season, placing seventh at Winthrop and 10th at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational last weekend. The Tranoy, Norway native was also named to the Conference Carolinas Academic all-Conference team this season for his outstanding work in the classroom, while earning a spot on the UTSFCCCA all-Academic Team for the second straight year.

Lees-McRae posted a solid season this past fall, finishing third in the Conference Carolinas Championships and recording an eighth-place showing at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championships. Simpkins and Thorbergsen each earned a spot on the academic all-conference team, as Simpkins finished sixth at the conference championships to nab a slot on the all-conference second team.
