CONCORD, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College cross country programs competed at the 2017 Conference Carolinas Cross Country Championships Friday afternoon in Concord, N.C. The men's team finished second behind only Mount Olive, while the women's squad placed ninth out of 10 teams.
Much like he has during the rest of this season, Austin Thompson led the way for LMC's men's team Friday with an 11th place finish coming in at 26:45.7. Overall, Lees-McRae placed six runners in the upper half of the 63-runner field. Nolan Capps finished 14th with a mark of 27:06.0, while Tristin Bertie, Shawn Graves, Lane Graves and Mateo Defoor also finished within the top 30 of the finishes Friday.
Of the 66 runners in the women's race, Lees-McRae had a pair of student-athletes notch top 40 finishes. Jordyn Halvorsen led the way with a time of 25:51.5 on her way to finishing 28th. Fellow junior Kaitlyn Gearing tallied the other top 40 finish for women's team as she finished 40th with a time of 27:29.3.
By virtue of their finish Friday, the men's team has qualified for the Southeast Regional Championship. That race will occur on November 4th in Wingate, North Carolina.
