Cross Country opens 2018 with a strong showing at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College cross country programs began their 2018 seasons with a strong showing Saturday morning at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational. LMC's men's team placed second among the 10 teams competing, while the women's squad finished fifth among the 12-team field.

Overall, the Bobcats had seven runners place among the top 25 times in the 98-person field Saturday. Leading the way for Lees-McRae's men's squad was the senior duo of Austin Thompson and Shawn Graves. Thompson finished sixth with a time of 27:55.3. Graves, meanwhile, also placed within the top 10 finishes placing ninth with a time of 28:15.0.

In the 5k women's race, senior Jordyn Halvorsen posted the best time for LMC with a mark of 22.14.4. Not far behind Halvorsen was fellow Bobcat Brianne Heard who finished 13th with a time of 22.15.2 in her first race as a collegiate runner.

The Bobcats will return to action on September 14 when they make the trek to Newton, N.C. to compete in the Lenoir-Rhyne Cross Country Invitational.
