Softball Signs Three More Recruits

BANNER ELK, NC--Head Softball Coach Julie Kennedy would like to announce the final early signings for the 2008 recruiting class. Crystal Beam, Kierstie Moon and Amanda Leonard will be coming to Lees-McRae next year and playing softball for the Lady Bobcats.

A positive addition to the Bobcat's team is utility player Crystal Beam of West Iredell High School. Beam can play just about any position on the field with the exception of pitcher. She will be competing in the areas of shortstop and catcher for the Bobcats next season. Beam, who plays in the summer for the Dirt Dobbers, is known as a competitor who hates to lose and will do whatever it takes to win.

"Crystal is a scrappy ball player and vocal leader," says Kennedy. "I liked her when she came for a workout, but was hugely impressed when I saw her interacting with her teammates in a game this fall."

The Bobcats are also excited about the addition of another utility player; Kierstie Moon of Oxford, Georgia. Kierstie is a second baseman at Newton County High School. She will compete both in the outfield and at second base for the Bobcats next year. As for athletic awards, she has gotten 1st Team All Area since her freshman year, was her team's MVP her sophomore year and got the offensive award her junior year.

Kennedy calls Kierstie Moon "one tough young lady." Kennedy also commented, "She's a real hard worker and a solid player. I am looking forward to having her here."

Last, but certainly not least, is Amanda Leonard of North Lincoln High School. Leo, as her friends calls her, batted .359 for her summer team (Foothills HEAT) and had a fielding percentage of .981. Her consistency in the field is a welcomed addition for the Bobcats. While she is a second baseman for her high school, Leo will be competing in the area of outfield for the Bobcats. Known for her gritty style of play, Leo doesn't hesitate to hit the ground for a ball.

"Leo has the playing style that we look for in our softball program," says Kennedy. "She takes chances and has little concept of fear."

The three new signees, combined with fellow newcomer Ashley Benfield, will join a seasoned group of Bobcats next year (Fall of 2008). Lees-McRae College opens their season this spring at Clark Atlanta University on February 2nd. They will be looking to the leadership of last year's statistic leaders, the stability of their sophomore class and group of freshmen contributors that will be fun to watch.
