Softball Wins Season Debut

Atlanta, GA--The Lees-McRae women's softball team opened up their season Saturday afternoon by defeating Clark Atlanta University on their home field, outscoring them 16-0 in the first game of the doubleheader and 24-8 in the second.

Returning sophomore pitcher, Amanda Dodson (Walnut Cove, NC) went the distance on the mound in her shutout effort for game one, throwing 11 strikeouts in just five innings. Dodson was backed by a strong offense from the Lady Bobcats who scored two runs in the top half of the first inning to take an early lead.

The offense continued its attack, scoring another run in the second when Davis singled sending Baxter home from third. In the third, the Lady Bobcats broke lose, scoring five runs on three hits with RBIs going to Paula Fryar (Clinton, NC), Megan Davis (Alexis, NC), Meagan Knowles (West Palm Beach Florida), and junior Salle' Horner (Lexington, SC) who hit her first homer of the year.

In the fourth inning, picture Dodson led off with a homerun, which Fryar followed with a double. The Lady Bobcats continued their hitting onslaught, scoring six runs off of five hits. In the fifth, the team added two insurance runs to seal the win 16-0.

After a rough team defensive start, freshman Magen West (Whitney, TX) came in relief of Lauren Gisler in the second inning with the score tied 5-5. In her first appearance on the mound for the Lady Bobcats, West responded by striking out 7 and allowing only two hits in the remaining 4 1/3 innings in game two. Clark Atlanta adding one more run, taking a 6-5 lead, before the Bobcats got out of the second inning.

In the third the Lady Bobcats clawed their way back into the game with Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, NC) and Davis both hitting doubles to help push the score to 8-6. Fueled by two errors and two passed balls by Clark Atlanta in the fourth, the Lady Bobcats added four runs to bring the score to 12-6.

The Lady Bobcats broke lose in the sixth inning scoring 11 runs off of 10 hits and no errors. Consistency in the batter's box paid off for LMC; in this inning alone the Lady Bobcats hit eight singles and two doubles. Clark Atlanta attempted to rally in the bottom of the inning, but managed only two runs off of pitcher Lauren Gisler (Peach Tree City, GA) giving the 24-8 victory to Lees-McRae.

The Bobcats travel to Columbia, SC to take on Benedict College in another doubleheader Sunday afternoon. Games are set to begin at 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
