Softball Wins Second Doubleheader of Weekend
Columbia, SC--The Lady Bobcats softball team increased their season record to 4-0 by defeating Benedict College 8-0 then 12-2 in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader in Columbia, SC.
Sophomore Amanda Dodson( Walnut Cove, NC) once again went to the mound for the Lady Bobcats, this time striking out 10 batters while only allowing three hits in the shutout.
Held scoreless the first inning, the Lady Bobcats were anxious to get on the board in the second inning. Dodson, up to bat first, led off with a double and, after a walk by Megan Davis (Alexis, NC), stole third to position herself for the score off of Zsachlayne Roguska's (Port Charlotte, FL) sacrificial ground out to third base.
In the third inning the Lady Bobcats were once again held scoreless, but rallied in the fourth to score two runs and adding a another run in the fifth to put them up 4-0. Two passed balls, a double by junior Salle' Horner (Lexington, SC), and singles by Anna Carter (Hudson Mills, NC) and Paige Coleman (Thomasville, NC) allowed the Lady Bobcats to accumulate four more runs, putting the final score at 8-0 in favor of Lees-McRae.
In the second game of the afternoon, Coach Kennedy put freshman Magen West (Whitney, TX) back on the mound. West's pitching and solid defense on the part of her teammates, allowed Benedict to score only in the third inning, when the Tigers took advantage of a walk, wild pitch, and hit batter by the young pitcher. West recovered, however, and finished out the game with strong pitching.
Lees-McRae scored two runs in the second inning off of three hits and added another run in the third when Nicole Baxter (Denver, NC), who doubled at her at bat, scored on a passed ball. Roguska singled in the fourth, advancing to second on the error by the Tiger's left fielder and later scored on another error by the Tigers.
In the fifth inning two more runs were scored off of a hit and an error. The fired up Lady Bobcats offense the scored another three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 12-2 win for Lees-McRae.
