Central, SC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats women's softball team traveled to Central, SC to face NAIA Div I opponent Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon, splitting the doubleheader with the Lady Warriors in their home opener. After falling 2-1 in the first game, the Lady Bobcats recovered, outscoring their hosts 13-5 in the second game. Lees-McRae climbs to 7-1 for the year while Southern Wesleyan falls to 1-3.
Sophomore Amanda Dodson (Walnut Cove, NC) pitched a tremendous game for the Lady Bobcats in game one, striking out six batters in six innings and walking no batters.
Lees-McRae was the first to score in the contest, when Anna Carter ( Hurdle Mills, NC) who reached base by an error by the short stop, was moved around the bases by a sacrifice by Dodson, a single by Paula Fryar (Clinton, NC), and another single by freshman Paige Coleman (Thomasville, NC). The Lady Warriors, however, capitalized on back-to-back hits and an error to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to put them ahead. The Lady Bobcats were unable to convert opportunities in the following innings and dropped the game 2-1.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lady Bobcats rallied to a decisive victory, outscoring the host team 13-5 in five innings. Led by sophomore Paula Fryar (who was 4-4 at the plate with 3 singles, a double and 3RBIs) the Lady Bobcats outhit SWU 15-7, stole four bases and took full advantage of the five errors committed by the Lady Warriors to pay them back for the earlier loss. Going the distance, freshman Magen West (WhitneyTX) was the winning pitcher for LMC.
The Lady Bobcats will be on the road again next weekend, competing in Brevard, NC against Brevard College Saturday, February 16th at 2:00pm & 4:00pm. On Sunday The team will host Milligan College, playing at Elizabethton High School in Elizabethton, TN at 1:00pm & 3:00pm.
