Softball Wins First Game but Falls in Extra Innings in Second to Brevard
Brevard, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats got their ninth win of the season Saturday afternoon taking the first game of the double header 4-0 against host school Brevard College in Brevard, NC. The Tornados and Lady Bobcats battled through eight innings before Brevard went ahead for the 3-2 win in the second game. LMC now stands at 9-3, while their NCAA Div II opponent falls to 6-4 on the year.
In the first game both teams held the other scoreless until the Lady Bobcats broke loose in the fifth after pitcher Amanda Dodson (Walnut Cove, NC) singled then advanced to second on an error by Brevard's right fielder. Lauren Gisler (Peachtree City, GA) singled, advancing Dodson, then proceeded to steal second, putting herself in scoring position. When Elaine Beavers (Lebanon, VA) made it to first on Brevard's second error of the inning, both Lady Bobcat base runners scored.
Dodson, pitching a shutout and striking out eight batters in the winning effort, had tremendous support both offensively and defensively from her teammates. Junior captain Salle' Horner (Lexington, SC) hit a two run home run in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 4-0, a lead the Lady Bobcats refused to give up.
In the second game Dodson returned to the mound, pitching the first two innings before handing the ball over to Lauren Gisler with the score 0-0. Gisler gave a great effort for the Lady Bobcats pitching four full innings and allowing only one run in the bottom of the sixth. Down one heading into the top of the seventh, Dodson (now in left field) doubled with two outs. With the game on the line, Head Coach Julie Kennedy made the strategic decision to put Magen West (Whitney, TX) in for Gisler at the plate. West singled, sending the tying run home. With West now on the mound, the Lady Bobcats kept the Tornado from scoring forcing the game into extra innings.
Lees-McRae attacked at the top of the eighth with Meagan Knowles (West Palm Beach, FL) placed on second to start the inning, the first batter up, Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, NC) grounded out to the short stop before sophomore Paula Fryar (Clinton, NC) came up with a double to put the Lady Bobcats in the lead. However, in the bottom of the inning the Tornado used two sacrifices to tie up the game before West gave up a single and a double allowing Brevard to take a 3-2 win in the game.
"Today is the first day we really put everything together-defense, offense, pitching, chemistry, effort and mental game. This was a moral victory for our team as we set a new standard in all these areas," said Kennedy. "Now we just need to finish what we start."
The Lady Bobcats head home to prepare for their first Conference Carolinas game. They will face Coker College in Hartsville, SC on Sunday, February 24. Game times are set for 2:00pm and 4:00pm. Brevard will resume play on February 22 when they host Mountain State at 2:00pm.
