Coker Shuts Out Lees-McRae
Hartsville, SC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats opened up Conference Carolinas play Sunday afternoon taking on the defending conference champions Coker College in a doubleheader. With Shelly Catlett (Orangeburg, SC) pitching a complete game, the Lady Cobras shut out the Lady Bobcats 6-0 in game one, then continued to hold them scoreless in the second, defeating the Lady Bobcats 8-0. With the win Coker improves to 6-6 overall and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas action while LMC drops to 9-5 (0-2).
After allowing the Lady Cobras to take an early1-0 in the first inning the Lady Bobcats held the defending champions scoreless through the next two innings, before giving up another run in the fourth. The Lady Cobras continued attacking the Lady Bobcats both offensively and defensively, keeping them from scoring while adding a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take the 6-0 win.
On the mound for the Lady Bobcats was Amanda Dodson (Walnut Cove, NC), who allowed four runs on five hits while striking out four batters in five innings. Three players got a hit off Catlett in the shut out: junor Salle' Horner (Lexington, SC), sophomore Meagan Knowles (West Palm Beach, FL), and freshman Paige Coleman (Thomasville, NC).
In game two the Lady Cobras once again jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring two runs off of the Lady Bobcats' sophomore pitcher Lauren Gisler (Peachtree City, GA). Coker came out swinging in the second getting four hits before Nicole Baxter (Denver, NC) took over at the plate. By the end of the second the Lady Cobras were up 7-0, a lead that proved too much for the young Lady Bobcats squad to overcome.
The Bobcats did manage to get three hits off the Lady Cobras with Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, NC) gaining a double, while teammates Horner and Knowles each chipped in singles for the game.
Sydney Greenwalt (Edwardsville, IL) got the win for the Lady Cobras pitching the second shut-out of the day in five innings.
Coach Julie Kennedy commented, "This was a wake up call for all of us. It shows us how hard we have to work mentally and physically to compete with the top teams in the conference."
The Lady Bobcats will travel to Bristol, TN on Tuesday to play the Tornado in another double header. Games are set to begin at 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Wednesday's home games against Bluefield College have been cancelled.
