Softball Splits with UVA-Wise

Wise, VA--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats split with UVA-Wise in women's softball action Sunday afternoon in Wise, VA. The Lady Bobcats, with seven hits and no errors, won the first game of the doubleheader 5-2 then, despite having ten hits in the second game, lost 8-3 to the Lady Cavs. Lees-McRae now stands at 13-11 with a 3-5 Conference Carolinas record. UVA-Wise is 3-3 on the year.

UVA-Wise got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first after the Lady Cavs Maddi Ridenhour's (Suffolk, Va.) single was followed by a double from Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.). Pitcher Amanda Dodson (Walnut Cove, N.C.) recovered, striking out two of the next three batters to close out the inning. Dodson went on to pitch a complete seven inning game, striking out a total of six batters in the winning effort.

Although the Lady Bobcats were held scoreless for the first three innings, they took advantage of fielding and pitching mistakes to score in the top of the fourth, tying the score at 1-1. In the fifth junior Salle Horner (Lexington, S.C.) walked, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Meagan Knowles (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Sophomore Paula Fryar (Clinton, N.C.) then singled to centerfield pushing Horner to third. The Lady Bobcats completed a double steal with team captain Horner scoring on the stolen base.

In the top the seventh Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, N.C.) hit a homerun with two runners on base to increase the lead to 5-1. The Lady Cavs attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh when Maddi Ridenhour (Suffolk, Va.) tripled scoring Sarah Frazier (Big Stone Gap, Va.) but were unable to muster any more runs and fell 5-2.

After holding the Lady Cavs to two scoreless frames, the Lady Bobcats allowed UVA-Wise to break loose in the third when Frazier and Brittany Tunnell (Wise, Va.) singled and Ridenour loaded the bases on a fielder's choice. Bobbi Mihelarakis (Sterling, Va.) walked to score Frazier. Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) stepped to the plate and drove a deep ball over centerfield to complete a five-run inning.

The Lady Bobcats broke on the board in the fourth with singles by Fryar, Magen West (Whitney, TX) and Horner. However, the Lady Cavs increased their lead in the fifth when Wilson and Lawson connected for solo round-trippers to make the score 7-1. In the sixth Fryar hit a solo homerun adding another to the Lady Bobcats tally. The Lady Cavs retaliated, scoring in the bottom of the inning to increase the lead to 8-2. Then, with runners on base in the seventh, Fryar singled gaining her second RBI of the game, but it was not enough. LMC fell 8-3 despite having ten hits and only one error in the nightcap.
