MURFEESBORO, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats women's softball team dropped a doubleheader, 3-0 and 3-2, to the Chowan University Lady Hawks Saturday afternoon in nonconference action.
In game one the Lady Hawks used a three-run second inning to take the lead. Allie Hunka had a two RBI triple gave the game its first runs of the game. Hunka scored when Jenna Lassiter reached on an error to make it 3-0.
Lees-McRae never pushed a run across as the game ended 3-0. The Lady Bobcats left seven runners in scoring position during the game, three times with runners on second and third.
Magen West was saddled with the loss for Lees-McRae in six innings of work allowing only the three run third inning. She allowed two earned runs and recorded five strikeouts. Shellie Wimpey earned the win for Chowan in six shutout innings.
Paige Coleman led the Lady Bobcats offensively by going 3-for-3.
In game two Lees-McRae got on the scoreboard first in the first inning when Veronica Ollier reached on an error and scored on a West RBI double down the left field line.
But, Chowan answered in the bottom of the first when Mindy Byrd walked and stole second. She reached third on pass ball and scored when Tricia Gorman grounded back to the pitcher.
The game remained scoreless until Lees-McRae pushed another unearned run across in the fourth inning. Meagan Knowles reached on a single to center. After Ashley Benfield reached on an error Ollier delivered a two out RBI single to make the score 2-1.
Chowan tied the game at two in the fifth inning when Jenna Lassiter was hit by a pitch then scored when Melissa Woodrum doubled to right center.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Lady Hawks scored what proved to be the game winner when Brenna Thomas scored an unearned run.
Amanda Dodson took the loss for Lees-McRae, while Allie Kolezynski earned the win for Chowan.
Lees-McRae was led by Ollier, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and by West, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Lady Bobcats will travel to University of Virginia at Wise Friday, February 13th for their next doubleheader.
