BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College women's softball team scored five runs on three homeruns in two games to sweep the visiting Virginia Intermont College Lady Cobras in a nonconference doubleheader, 3-1 and 2-0, Tuesday afternoon.
In game one, Lees-McRae scored the first run of the game in the
second inning when Magen West launched a towering drive over the
centerfield fence to give the team a 1-0 lead.
Paige Coleman added what proved to be the game-winning blast in the
in the fourth inning when her two-run homer gave the Lady Bobcats a
3-0 lead.
Ashley Fields put the Lady Cobras on the board in the seventh
inning with a solo homer to cut the lead to 3-1 and give the game
its final score.
Katie Alexander earned the win in three innings of work, while
Kristen Dyer was saddled with the loss. Amanda Dodson picked up
the save in four innings of work giving up two hits and recording
six strikeouts.
Fields was the only player from both lineups to earned multiple
hits during the game. She was 2-for-3 with a single to go along
with her solo homerun.
In game two, no one reached base until Michelle Kidd notched the
first hit of game in the fourth inning for the Lady Cobras, and
after a Lees-McRae three-up, three-down bottom half the fourth the
Lady Cobras had the first scoring chance of the game.
Kayla Mitchelle led off with a single and advanced to second when
Kristen Dyer laid down a sacrifice bunt. After a pitching change,
Natasha Carlucci singled to put runners at the corners with only
one out for the Lady Cobras. But, Dodson got Fields to ground to
Amanda Leonard at second, who alertly tagged the advancing runner
and threw to first to complete the double play and end the
threat.
In the home half of the fifth, Paula Fryar led off with a single.
After a fly out to third and a failed sacrifice attempt Dodson
stepped to the plate and belted an opposite field two-run blast to
give the Lady Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Dodson returned to the circle for Lees-McRae and only allowed one
hit over the next two innings to earn the win. Nikita Belcher took
the loss for the Lady Cobras.
Dodson finished the day with a homerun, a win and a save for the
Lady Bobcats.
Lees-McRae will travel to King College Saturday, February 21st for
their next game.
