BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats (17-15, 5-7) women's softball team split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with the Barton College Lady Bulldogs (10-16, 5-5) Saturday afternoon; Lees-McRae took the first game 4-0 but fell in the second game 11-4.
On the day for the Lady Bobcats Meagan Knowles was 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored.
In game one, Magen West threw a complete game shutout for the Lady Bobcats. She recorded eight strikeouts and scattered six hits to earn the win in the circle.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Lees-McRae notched all four of their runs. Knowles led the inning off with a single to center. Amanda Leonard and Ashley Benfield both reached on errors that allowed Knowles to score the first run of the game. Veronica Ollier followed with a two RBI triple to left-center and scored when Nicole Baxter doubled down the left field line to make it 4-0.
Knowles, who was 2-for-3, led the Lady Bobcats at the plate, and Ollier's two RBI was a team high.
Kendall Street was the only Lady Bulldog with multiple hits. She had two hits in three plate appearances.
In game two, the Lady Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Stacy Wade singled and scored on a Lady Bobcat error to give Barton a 1-0 lead.
Barton added an unearned run in the fourth inning and an earned run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Lady Bulldogs erupted in the sixth inning when they sent 11 batters to the plate, had three singles, smashed two doubles and scored six runs. All six runs were unearned to push the lead to 9-0. The highlight of the inning was a three-run double to right-center by Amber Fletcher.
The Lady Bobcats responded in the bottom of the six with three runs to cut the lead to 9-3. Anna Carter led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and Paula Fryar singled to set up for a Knowles two-run double. Knowles scored the final run of the inning when Leonard reached on a Barton error.
Barton pushed the lead back to 11-3 with two runs on two hits in the top of the seventh, while Lees-McRae added the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Baxter scored on a Knowles sacrifice fly to give the game the final of 11-4.
Fryar led the Lady Bobcats with two hits in four trips to the plate, and Knowles tallied three RBI.
For the Bulldogs, Street was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Amber Fletcher was 2-for-5 with three RBI.
The Lady Bobcats will host Coker College Sunday at 2 p.m. for their next doubleheader.
