HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- Eight different players tallied base knocks for Lees-McRae College as the Bobcats eased their way to an 11-2 victory over Belmont Abbey College in the first round of consolation play in the 2011 Conference Carolinas Softball Tournament hosted by Coker College.
Lees-McRae (23-26) rallied its way to victory with seven different Bobcats touching the plate during the contest. Lindsey Huntsinger (Asheville, N.C.) and Karli Robb (Hayes, Va.) paced LMC as each tallied a 2-for-4 performance on the day while driving in three runs apiece en route to the win. Kierstie Moon (Oxford, Ga.) went 2-for-2 at the dish and scored three of the Bobcat runs in the victory.
The lone bright spot for the Crusaders (16-28) came in the top of the fourth inning when Carol-Anne Sherrill homered to left-center field, plating the only two runs on the afternoon for Belmont Abbey.
The Bobcats plated two runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 advantage in the contest. Lees-McRae loaded the bases with one out in the home portion of the first frame with Moon scoring on a Kim Coley (Marion, N.C.) single to take the 1-0 advantage. Huntsinger scored on a fielder's choice to plate the second run for LMC.
The Bobcats continued to click in the bottom of the second with Moon and Meagan Knowles (West Palm Beach, Fla.) scoring on a Robb two-out single to left center to make it a 4-0 Bobcat lead.
The Bobcats doubled their lead in the home half of the third inning, scoring four runs on five hits, while sending ten batters to the plate in the frame. Paige Coleman (Thomasville, N.C.) opened the inning with a solo home run to center field, with Coley following with a shot of her own to left to quickly make it a six run margin for the Bobcats. Lees-McRae loaded the bases before Moon walked to plate the third run of the inning, as Robb capped the frame's scoring with a one-out single to push the margin to 8-0.
Sherrill would cut the Bobcat margin to 8-2 in the top of the fourth with a shot to left-center, but the Bobcats would quell the rally and close the inning with no more damage done.
The Bobcats would close the contest early, picking up three runs in the bottom of the fifth to walk-off with an 11-2 victory. Lori Fulmer (Prosperity, S.C.) opened the frame with a bunt single before moving to second with a stolen base. Following a walk and an out, Huntsinger stepped into the box and blasted her 14th bomb of the season to end the contest and seal the Bobcat win.
Magen West (Whitney, Texas) picked up the complete game victory, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts on the day.
The Bobcats will face sixth-seeded Mount Olive College in an elimination game on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in Hartsville, S.C. The winner of the contest will face off with the winner of the matchup between No. 3 Coker College and No. 8 Pfeiffer University at 1 p.m. to continue play in the tournament.
