Trojans hold off Bobcats for twin-bill sweep

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- Kierstie Moon (Oxford, Ga.) clubbed her second career home run, and Kristen Oakes (Lenoir, N.C.) surrendered just one earned run in six innings of work to pace the Lees-McRae College softball team in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Monday afternoon against Mount Olive College, as the Trojans swept the twin-bill.

Mount Olive (21-7, 8-2 CC) took game one in five innings, 11-3, while plating three late runs in the night cap to edge Lees-McRae (7-28, 2-6 CC) by a score of 5-2. The Bobcats battled throughout the twin-bill, collecting 13 hits and 17 total bases, as the Trojans recorded 15 base knocks and drew 11 walks.

Sadie Lagle (Harmony, N.C.) paced the Bobcats with four hits in five at-bats, as she and Moon both scored two runs. Brooke Sheridan (Rosman, N.C.) added three base knocks, while Alison Armstrong (Bellingham, Mas.), Amanda Decker (Apex, N.C.), Moon, and Oakes each drove in one run.

Oakes took the ball in game one, allowing one earned run on five hits in four innings of work. Hollie Crickenberger (Boydton, Va.) got the nod in the night cap, surrendering two earned runs on four hits and striking out three through four frames. Oakes tossed the final two innings in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out one.

Beth Overman and Katie Moore each led the way for Mount Olive with three hits, as Overman scored three runs and drove in four with a home run. Savannah Becker and Savannah Westover both crossed the plate three times, while Danielle Mitchell, Kallie Smith, Jennifer Jones, and Westover each drove in two runs.

Christie Wright got the start in game one, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out three in five innings of work. Lauren Smith took the ball in the night cap, surrendering one earned run on six hits and striking out four in a complete game effort.

Game One: Mount Olive 11, Lees-McRae 3 (Box Score)

Mount Olive got on the board in the first inning, taking an early 2-0 lead on a single by Smith. The Bobcats answered with two runs in the top of the second, evening the tally at 2-2 on a run-scoring single by Armstrong before Decker drove in Oakes.

The Trojans countered with two in the bottom of the inning, claiming a 4-2 advantage following an RBI base knock by Mitchell. Moon halved the margin to 4-3 in the top of the third, launching a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left for a leadoff solo home run.

Mount Olive answered with a seven-run fifth inning, closing out the victory with back-to-back bases loaded walks by Mitchell and Overman.

Game Two: Mount Olive 5, Lees-McRae 2 (Box Score)

The Trojans took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, pushing across the game's first runs on a two-run long ball by Overman after Becker led off with a double. The Bobcats battled back in the second and third frames, scoring one run in each inning to even the tally at 2-2.

After Moon and Sheridan each reached base to lead off the frame, and Lagle singled to load the bases with one out, Oakes drove in Moon to knot the score at 2-2. Mount Olive answered with three runs in the fourth, taking a 5-2 lead when Jones stroked a two-run double after Overman drove in Westover with a base knock.

The Bobcats battled back in the sixth, putting runners on second and third with two outs before Smith retired the final four batters she faced to close out the win.

Lees-McRae returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 2 when the Bobcats host Lenoir-Rhyne University in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
