Softball Drops Two to Limestone

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae softball team wasn't able to get its offense going in game one while it fell 3-0 before a pitcher's duel turned into a slugfest in game two while LMC dropped a 5-2 decision against Limestone in Conference Carolinas play at LMC Softball Field Sunday afternoon in Banner Elk, N.C.

The Saints (26-16, 10-4 CC) were powered by two complete games and the bat of Bailie Maybry, who had four hits on the day. The Bobcats (8-35, 3-11) are clinging to the No. 8 seed for the upcoming CC Softball Championship with two games remaining.

Game 1 – Limestone 3, LMC 0

LC made things interesting quickly when its first three batters reached on singles to load the bases. Freshman Sarah Beth Ashley (Walkertown, N.C.) turned a phenomenal double play when she caught a fly ball off the bat of Carissa Snyder and threw out Ashley Cox at home.

Senior Jessica Smith (Gastonia, N.C.) used a web gem of her own when she laid out and threw Alycia Stiles out at first while preventing runs from scoring.

Maybry singled to third in the top of the third and stole second. Stiles connected on a RBI double to right center to give the Saints the 1-0 advantage.

The Bobcats missed out on a golden opportunity when they put runners on second and third, but was unable to convert when Alison Armstrong (Bellingham, Mass.) scorched a ball to first, but it was snagged.

Sam Thornton would score in the top of the fifth following a fielder's choice and error. Pitcher Taylor Wigmore helped her own cause with a RBI groundout later in the inning.

Wigmore would settle in and toss a complete game two-hitter while Valerie Hickey (Umatilla, Fla.) and Ashley Lindsay (Holly Springs, N.C.) were the only Bobcats to record a hit.

Freshman Charlie Dutton (Monroe, Ga.) took the loss when she allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings of relief work.

Game 2 – Limestone 5, LMC 2

Both pitchers cruised through the first three innings while there was a combined two hits.

Freshman Taylor Billings (Sophia, N.C.) roped a single up the middle with one out in the fourth before Sadie Lagle (Harmony, N.C.) cranked a double to left center. Junior Amanda Decker (Apex, N.C.) plated both runners with a slicing double that hit the chalk along the right field line.

The lead was short lived because Limestone responded with a four-spot in the top of the fifth. Stiles tied it with a two-run single to right before Amanda Hayes hit a triple to right center to score two more runs.

Caroline Childers would score in the top of the sixth thanks to heads up base running to push the LC lead to three, 5-2.

LMC would bring the tying run to the dish in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to capitalize.

The Bobcats conclude their regular season with a doubleheader against Mount Olive April 22 starting at 12 p.m.
