WISE, Va. --- The Lees-McRae softball team dropped a heartbreaker in game one, 2-1, before falling in game two, 5-0, to UVa.-Wise Saturday afternoon at Cavalier Field in Wise, Va.

The Cavaliers (1-0) opened their season with a win after Delany Turner threw a complete game five-hitter. The Bobcats (1-8) pitching staff impress with only one walk while striking out six.
LMC struck quickly in the top of the first after freshman Emily Merriam (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) hit a one-out double to left center.
Freshman Noel Cassidy (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) advanced her to third while reaching on an error.
During Brea Lawson's (King, N.C.) at-bat, the Bobcats pulled off a successful double steal to grab a 1-0 advantage.
Both pitchers settled in while exchanging shutout innings until the fifth.
The Cavaliers' Alexa Hernandez tied it at one with a solo shot to left center.
Junior Taylor Billings (Sophia, N.C.) worked her way out of a bases load jam.
She struck out the leadoff hitter before allowing three consecutive singles. Billings didn't flinch and struck out Oliva Cleary before induced a groundout from Hernandez.
LMC stranded Sarah Stallings (Greensboro, N.C.) on third in the top of the seventh after she singled.
UVa.-Wise worked its two-out magic with a pair of singles and hit batsman to scratch across the game-winning run in the bottom of the seven.
Billings (0-1) earned the tough loss after allowing one earned run in 3.2 innings of work.

The Cavaliers (2-0) scored all of their runs in the final two innings while Lucindy Lawson turned in three RBI. The Bobcats (1-9) enjoyed a two-hit performance from freshman Karly McRary (Marion, N.C.).
Both offenses were mum through the first four innings while the pitchers exchanged zeros.
Lawson broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth with a run-scoring double.
Two batters later, Shannon Bennett made it 2-0 after a RBI groundout. Mindy Combs drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to three, 3-0.
Lawson connected on a two-run dinger in the bottom of the sixth, 5-0.
Freshman Kara Cunningham (Indian Trail, N.C.) (0-5) took the loss after 4.1 innings of work and three runs (one earned).
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. when they face West Virginia Tech before taking on West Virginia St. at 1:30 p.m. in the Coker Spring Tournament in Hartsville, S.C.
