JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lees-McRae College softball team dropped a pair of games to open its 2017 season Thursday to Carson-Newman. The Eagles knocked off the Bobcats by scores of 10-0 and 9-0 with both games ended in five innings.
Game 1 – Carson-Newman used an eight-run second inning on its way to a 10-0 win over the Bobcats in the first game of the day in five innings.
LMC's best opportunity to score came in the very first inning. The Bobcats loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk with one out. Eagles' starter Alli Webster forced the next two batters to pop out and ground into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
The Eagles opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning and followed that up with the eight-run second to conclude the scoring.
Five different Bobcats accounted for the team's five base hits Thursday. Chelsea Digregorio accounted for the lone extra-base hit for LMC with a double in the fourth inning.
Kara Cunningham was tagged with the loss after pitching four innings, while allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on eight hits.
Game 2 – The Eagles used another big offensive inning in game two to power a 9-0 win over the Bobcats to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The big-run inning came once again in the second for Carson-Newman with the major blow coming on a grand slam from Abby Flessinger. The Eagles scored seven runs total in the second and added a run in the third and another in the fourth.
Dutton was also the starting pitcher for the Bobcats and was saddled with the loss. Dutton threw for three-and-two-thirds innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits.
Next Up – LMC will return to action Saturday when it travels to face Newberry (S.C.) in another doubleheader. First pitches are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
