HICKORY, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team picked up a pair of victories in Hickory, N.C. Friday as it defeated Johnson C. Smith and Mercyhurst by scores of 6-1 and 9-6. The pair of victories improve LMC's record to 2-8 on the season.
Game 1: Senior Taylor Billings did not allow an earned run in her second complete game-effort of the season to help lead the Bobcats notch their first win of 2017 as they defeated Johnson C. Smith, 6-1. Billings also matched a season-high with four strikeouts in the win and improved her record to 1-2.
Three different Bobcats had two-hit performances in game one. Pacing this group was Noel Cassidy who hit her second home run of the season and went 2-for-3 overall. Kara Cunningham went 2-for-3 as well, and Sarah Stallings put together a 2-for-2 outing with a walk in game one.
Game 2: The second game of the day was a back-and-forth affair as both teams held multiple leads. Mercyhurst scored one run in the second and fourth innings to open an early 2-1 lead on the Bobcats. LMC took the lead in the top of the sixth with three runs to take lead before the Lakers regained the advantage with four in the bottom half of the frame. The Bobcats clinched their second straight win with a five-run seventh inning to defeat Mercyhurst, 9-6.
Seven of the nine players in LMC's starting lineup notched hits in game two and six of seven had two hits. Emily Merriam went 2-for-3 and drove in three of the team's nine runs to pace LMC's offense.
Gabrielle Moyer started in the circle for Lees-McRae and pitched the first five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. Cunningham ended up getting the win pitching one-and-one third innings of scoreless relief. Cunningham's record improves to 1-2 on the season.
Next Up: The Bobcats will return to action Sunday for two more games at Lenoir-Rhyne. LMC will begin the day with a game against University of Virginia at Wise at noon before taking on Concord at 4 p.m.
