MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team earned a split in its doubleheader at Mars Hill University Sunday afternoon. The Lions won game one by a score of 7-5, but the Bobcats came back to win game two, 7-6. With the results Sunday, Lees-McRae's record stands at 8-12 on the season.
Game 1: LMC and MHU went scoreless through the first three innings in the first contest of the day. After the first three frames, however, the Lions' offense exploded for five runs in the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth to get out to a 7-0 lead on the Bobcats. Lees-McRae battled back with a four-run sixth and tacked on one more in the seventh, but it came up just short in its comeback attempt as it fell, 7-5.
Outfielders Alix Green and Sarah Stallings led LMC's offense in the first game going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI combined. Caitlyn Ray and Kara Cunningham also had multi-hit outings in game one going 2-for-4 and both of them drove in one run.
Taylor Billings took the loss in the circle for the Bobcats in game one, which dipped her record to 1-4 on the season. Billings threw all six innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits in the outing.
Game 2: Much like the case was in game one, one squad jumped out to an early lead thanks to a couple multi-run innings powering it to a victory. This time, however, the Bobcats broke out the bats scoring seven runs on eight on hits to upend the Lions, 7-6.
Stallings and Ray both notched their second two-hit performances of the day in game two to lead the Bobcat offense. For Stallings, it is her eighth multi-hit game in 2017 and for Ray it is her fifth.
Gabrielle Moyer picked up her third win of the season after putting together a complete game effort against the Lions. Moyer allowed six runs on 10 hits in her outing Sunday.
Next Up: LMC will return to action Wednesday when it travels to Hartsville, S.C. to take on Coker College in a doubleheader. The start time for that twin bill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
