WINGATE, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team dropped a pair of games on the road Thursday at Wingate by scores of 2-0 and 11-4. The losses drop LMC's record to 8-16 on the season.
Game 1: Wingate's starting pitcher Rachel Weidner kept LMC's offense off balance in game one to help her team clinch a 2-0 victory over Bobcats. Weidner pitched all seven innings for Bulldogs and tallied seven strikeouts.
Lees-McRae notched three hits in the first game of the day. Valerie Hickey, Sarah Tucker and Chelsea Digregorio accounted for those base hits, which were all singles. Kara Cunningham took the loss in the circle for LMC dropping her record to 5-5. Cunningham did post seven strikeouts, which was just one shy of her season-high.
Game 2: The Bobcats jumped on Wingate early on scoring three unearned runs in the top of the first. LMC continued to hold the lead until the Wingate scored five in the fourth and added six more in the fifth to finish off the doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats, 11-4.
Three Bobcats posted multi-hit outings in game two. Cunningham led these efforts with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Emily Merriam and Noel Cassidy both went 2-for-3 and drove in three of the team's four runs. Charlie Dutton was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in four innings of work. Dutton's record now stands at 0-6.
Next Up: After beginning the season with 24 games on the road, the Bobcats are scheduled to make their home debut Saturday when they host Converse in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
