BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team opened its home schedule Tuesday with a split against Converse College. The Valkyries won game one by a score of 2-1, but LMC rebounded to take game two, 2-0.
Game 1 Recap: Despite allowing just three hits in the first game of the day, LMC starting pitcher Kara Cunningham was the tough luck loser as Converse went on to defeat the Bobcats, 2-1. Cunningham matched a career-high nine strikeouts in the outing.
Converse got the scoring started with a home run in the fourth inning by Elizabeth Aguilar before adding an unearned run off of Cunningham in the sixth. LMC, however, got runners on first and second with just one out. After a fielder's choice, Cunningham hit a single to left field scoring Karly McRary but Caitlyn Ray was thrown out at home to end the game.
Game 2 Recap: For the second consecutive start, Charlie Dutton put together seven stellar innings in the circle to help lead the Bobcats to a 2-0 victory in game two. Dutton struck out seven Converse hitters and allowed just four hits in the contest. Over her last two starts, Dutton has a 0.50 ERA and has held opponents to a .156 batting average in 14 innings.
While Dutton led the efforts from the circle, Lees-McRae's number three, four and five hitters led the way offensively. The trio of Emily Merriam, Sarah Tucker and Noel Cassidy combined to go 5-for-9 with a pair of RBI.
Next Up: LMC, now 11-21 overall and 3-5 in league play, will return to action Friday when they host Belmont Abbey in Banner Elk in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
