JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lees-McRae College softball team dropped a pair of games at No. 20 Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon to open its 2018 season. LMC fell in game one in five innings by a score of 8-0. C-N was able to finish off the sweep with a 3-0 victory in the second game of the day.

Game 1 Recap – Carson-Newman's starting pitcher Lacie Rinus was in complete control in the first game of the day. The left-hander allowed just two hits in game one and struck out nine Bobcat hitters. Both of LMC's hits came off the bat of Chelsea Digregorio and they were both singles.

Lees-McRae's starter Kara Cunningham struggled with control in her first start of 2018 allowing eight walks in four innings. On top of the free passes, the Bobcats made three costly errors leading to five unearned runs for Carson-Newman. With all these factors working together, the Eagles downed LMC, 8-0, in five innings.

Game 2 Recap – Making her first collegiate start against a nationally-ranked foe, freshman Cassidy Largen gave the Bobcats a fantastic opportunity to knock off the Eagles in game two. Largen pitched six innings, allowed three runs on five hits and picked up three strikeouts.

Despite the effort from Largen, the Bobcat offense still could not find a way to crack the scoreboard on against Carson-Newman's pitching staff. LMC was limited to three hits and two walks in game two. Even with limited opportunities, the Bobcats had the tying run come to the plate in the top of the sixth inning but the Eagles got out of the jam preserving the 3-0 victory.

Next Up – Lees-McRae will look to pick up its first win of 2018 Sunday when it travels to Anderson University for another non-conference twin bill. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
