BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team will lift the lid on its 2019 season this Sunday with a trip to Anderson (S.C.) for a doubleheader. The pair of games are set for 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. first pitches.
Preseason poll – Lees-McRae was picked to finish fifth in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Coaches' Poll late last month. The trio of Kara Cunningham, Noel Cassidy and Caitlyn Ray were selected as players to watch for the team this spring.
2019 Bobcats – The 2019 Bobcats will have several familiar faces on the diamond this spring. Overall, there are 12 players returning from last year's squad. Lees-McRae has added nine newcomers to compete for playing time this spring.
Long road ahead – With their first 18 games of the season set to be played away from Banner Elk, the Bobcats hope to build upon their success away from home in 2018. Lees-McRae won nine true road games last spring, which is the most for the program since it won 10 such contests back in 2011.
About Anderson – The Trojans have already played six games this season, and they sport a record of 4-2. Anderson has come out of the gates hot offensively hitting .368 as a team with 29 runs scored. Kayson Boatner has led this charge for the Trojans hitting .600 with two home runs and seven RBI to date.
Series history vs. Anderson – Lees-McRae and Anderson are no strangers to each other as they have met a total of 23 times since 2006. The Bobcats trail in the series 7-16 since that season. The two teams split a twin bill last spring with the Bobcats winning one contest 1-0 and the Trojans coming out on top in the other, 5-4.
