BANNER ELK, N.C. – After being washed out of all its games last week, the Lees-McRae College softball team will have a busy seven days as it has five doubleheaders scheduled. Lees-McRae will begin the week by visiting Tusculum Tuesday before heading to Lander for a two-day four-game tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Bobcats will then play host to Lincoln Memorial on Sunday and then head to Wingate on Monday.
Last time out – Lees-McRae was last in action on February 16 when it competed against Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference double dip. The Bears won a pair of extra-inning games against the Bobcats by scores of 3-2 and 9-8. The pair of losses drop Lees-McRae's record to 0-4 so far in 2019.
Schedule adjustments – There have been several schedule changes this past week with the team's schedule. Tuesday's twin bill at Tusculum along with next Monday's games at Wingate are makeup dates from earlier rainouts. Additionally, the start time for the doubleheader at Erskine on March 30 has been pushed back to 2 p.m., and the games April 3 against Converse have been pushed back to April 4. Senior strikeout stat – With 12 strikeouts in the doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne, Kara Cunningham now sits second all-time in strikeouts in the history of Lees-McRae softball. Cunningham has now struck out 355 batters during her time as a Bobcat. Cunningham needs just 76 more strikeouts to move into first place on that list. Currently, former Bobcat Hannah Morgan (2004-2006) has the most strikeouts in the program history with 430.
Freshman finding success – After going hitless in her first collegiate game, freshman Julie Gast has found her swing in the next three contests. Gast posted two hits in both games at Lenoir-Rhyne, while also posting another two-hit performance in game two at Anderson. Gast is currently hitting .429 with a team-high four RBI and two stolen bases.
About the opponents – All of Lees-McRae's opponents this week have gotten off to good starts in 2019. Tusculum is currently 5-1, Mars Hill is 7-1, Lander is 11-4 and finally Lincoln Memorial and Wingate both come into the week with identical 10-2 records. Collectively, Lees-McRae's five opponents this week have a winning percentage of 81.1 percent.
Series histories vs. opponents – The Bobcats have seen their five opponents several times over the years. Overall, Lees-McRae has matched up against its five opponents a total of 49 times since the 2006 season. Furthermore, Lees-McRae has seen each team at least once in the past two seasons.
