BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team will return to action this weekend three doubleheaders in three days. The Bobcats will begin this stretch by traveling to King (Tenn.) University on Saturday before returning home to host Limestone on Sunday and Converse on Monday. Saturday's and Sunday's games are set to get underway at 1 p.m., while Monday's is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
Last time out – The Bobcats split a pair of games against Belmont Abbey last Saturday. Lees-McRae won game one, 13-8, before dropping game two by a score of 9-2. The results from Saturday move Lees-McRae's record to 13-15 overall and 7-7 within Conference Carolinas.
Conference honor for Cooke – Freshman Faith Cooke was honored by the league last Tuesday by being named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week. Cooke is the first Bobcat to earn this particular honor since the 2011 campaign. Cooke enters this weekend as one of two players to rank within the top five within the league in both batting average (.389) and home runs (8).
Slugging stats – Lees-McRae comes into the weekend tied for the league lead in slugging percentage with a mark of .428. In comparison, the Bobcats slugged at a .328 clip in 2018. Furthermore, the last time the Bobcats finished a season with a slugging percentage above .400 was back in 2011.
About the Opponents – King enters the weekend with an outside chance of winning the conference's regular season title as it holds a record of 24-15 overall and a 10-4 mark in league play. A player to watch for the Tornado is Kay Brokering. Brokering is hitting .410 with nine home runs and 35 RBI in 2019.
Limestone, meanwhile, currently sits in ninth place in the league standings coming into the weekend. The Saints are 17-21 overall and 5-9 in conference action. Despite the results on the field in 2019, the Saints still boast the league's leading hitter in Vic Brewington who comes into the weekend with a .411 batting average.
Finally, Converse is 6-38 overall and 1-13 within the Conference Carolinas this spring. The Valkyries are looking to break out of a 15-game losing skid that they are currently on. Gabrielle Cuevas is a player to watch for Converse as she is not only one of the team's top hitters (.284 batting average) but also boasts the lowest ERA on the pitching staff (2.84).
Series Rewind vs. Opponents – In 2018, the Bobcats posted a record of 3-3 against their three opponents over the next few days. Lees-McRae swept Converse last season down in Spartanburg by scores of 6-0 and 7-2. The Bobcats were swept at Limestone last spring and went 1-2 against the Tornado in 2018.
