DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Lees-McRae College softball team fell in its NCAA Tournament debut Thursday afternoon to No. 5 North Georgia by a score of 2-0. The loss moves Lees-McRae's record to 21-18 on the 2019 campaign.
Both of North Georgia's runs came in the bottom of the third inning. The Nighthawks got things started with a one-out walk from Kaylyn Anthony. After a foul out, Marlene Stowers hit a fly ball that was misplayed in the outfield and the Bobcats committed another error on the throw back into the infield to not only allow Anthony but also Stowers to come into score.
Facing the reigning National Pitcher of the Year in Kylee Smith, the Bobcats did not muster a ton of offense. Lees-McRae's lone hit in the contest came off the bat of Noel Cassidy with a single. Katie Robinson was the only other Bobcat baserunner in the game with a walk.
Kara Cunningham was once again outstanding in the circle for the Bobcats. Cunningham held the fifth-ranked team in the nation to three hits, two runs (zero earned) in seven innings of work. Even with this effort, Cunningham's record will dip to 14-9 with the defeat.
The Bobcats will play again Friday afternoon when they take on Coker College in an elimination game. The Cobras were defeated by Young Harris College earlier Thursday by a score of 6-0. First pitch between the Bobcats and Cobras is set for 2:30 p.m.
