BANNER ELK, N.C. – Lees-McRae College softball player Kara Cunningham was honored twice on Thursday by being named to the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) All-Region First Team and to the D2CCA All-Region Second Team. Cunningham becomes the first Bobcat softball player to ever be recognized with an All-Region selection.
The pair of accolades for Cunningham were definitely warranted as she turned in one of arguably the best individual seasons by a player in program history. The Indian Trail, North Carolina native captured the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year award after leading the Bobcats with a .395 batting average to go along with being team's top pitcher leading the squad in wins (14), innings pitched (158), strikeouts (166) and ERA (1.77). Furthermore, Cunningham was integral in Lees-McRae's memorable run in the Conference Carolinas Tournament on its way to winning its first conference championship in program history as she captured the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.
These honors for Cunningham is the latest of long list of accomplishments in her career as a Bobcat. Cunningham will graduate holding several program records as both a hitter and pitcher, four Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week honors and the program's first no-hitter since 2006.
Cunningham and the rest of the Bobcats will be back in action on Friday when they take on Coker College in an elimination game at the NCAA Tournament from Dahlonega, Georgia. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
