Mount Olive, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats fell 79-62 to the Mount Olive Trojans Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action. The Trojans improve to 13-9 (11-4 Conference Carolinas) while the Lady Bobcats record now stands at 6-16 (5-11).
Lakeisha Monroe led four players in double figures for the Trojans, scoring 20 points and adding nine assists and seven rebounds as the red hot Trojans picked up their eighth win in their last ten games. The game saw a near capacity crowd of more than 1,000 as part of the 25th Annual Mount Olive College Basketball Church Night. Congregations from churches across the region were in attendance.
Mount Olive overcame an early five-point deficit as back-to-back inside baskets by Moore gave the Trojans their first lead at 10-8 with 14:55 left in the first half. The game was tied four times in the first seven minutes before Moore's basket put Mount Olive on top for the remainder of the half.
Three-pointers by Monroe and Tomeka Prichard highlighted a 13-2 run as the Trojans extended their lead to 34-21 with 5:29 remaining and the lead stayed in double figures the rest of the half. Lees-McRae got as close as 11 points after Salisbury, NC nativeRenee Roberson's slashing layup, but Prichard answered by hitting all three free throws after getting fouled on a three-point attempt.
The Trojans built the lead to as many as 15 points and went into the locker room with a 42-29 advantage. Monroe and Moore combined for 23 first-half points for Mount Olive.
Mount Olive extended the lead past the 20-point mark as Monroe scored seven straight Trojan points and Shequanta McGee hit a three-pointer with 14:46 remaining to make the score 55-34. Lees-McRae came back with a 9-0 run on three-pointers by Courtney Furr (Concord, NC) and Jessica Lunsford (Elk Park, NC), and a three-point play by Roberson to pull the Bobcats within 57-45 with 12:17 left to play.
But Mount Olive built the margin back up to 19 as Alisa Jones blocked shots on back-to-back Lees-McRae possessions and McGee's three-pointer highlighted a 7-0 run to give the Trojans a 64-45 advantage with 9:30 remaining. The lead never fell below 15 points or surpassed 19 points the rest of the way.
Jones finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots for Mount Olive, while Moore tallied 12 points and seven boards. McGee added 10 points, while Keona Corley finished with seven points and eight assists.
Stephanie Mullinax (Etowah, TN) scored 20 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Roberson added 13 points and Furr finished with 10 points and six assists.
The Lady Bobcats will return to action Wednesday evening when the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons visit Williams Gymnasium while the Trojans will hit the road and travel to Coker to take on the Cobras.
