No. 16 Saints scratch Bobcats, 69-43

GAFFNEY, S.C. ---  The No. 16 Limestone College women's basketball team placed four players in double figures, and held Lees-McRae College to a field goal percentage of 27 percent en route to a 69-43 victory in Conference Carolinas play on Thursday evening.

Limestone (15-2, 12-1 CC) shot 42.4 percent from the floor on the night while winning the battle on the glass by a 47-36 margin, edging Lees-McRae (7-9, 5-8 CC) by a 33-25 stretch on the defensive boards. The Saints outscored the Bobcats, 38-20, in the paint while converting 21 Lees-McRae miscues into 17 points.

Alyssa Munson (Summerfield, N.C.) paced the Bobcats with 10 points and four rebounds, while Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) chipped in eight markers, five boards, and four steals. Layana De Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Candace Flowers (Charlotte, N.C.) each added seven points, as Kabrina Truesdale (Wilmington, N.C.) posted team-highs of five rebounds and four assists.

Stephanie Hayes led the way for Limestone with game-highs of 18 points and six steals, as Alicia Brookins added a contest-best 11 boards. Danielle Dixon chipped in 14 markers and eight rebounds, while Ashley Robinson and Maria Young each posted 11 points.

Limestone jumped out to an early 10-2 lead before the Bobcats answered, knocking down back-to-back buckets to cut the margin to 10-6 on a De Souza layup with 13:49 to go in the first half. The Saints countered with a 20-8 surge, pushing the advantage to 30-14 following a Robinson lay-in at the 3:56 mark.

The Bobcats would finish the half strong, closing the period with a 9-6 spurt to cut the lead to 36-23 heading into the intermission. Limestone quickly answered in the second period, opening the half with a 19-5 run to push the margin to 55-28 with 11:10 to play.

The Saints would close out the win from there, capping the victory with a late 8-4 spurt to equal the final margin of 69-43.

Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats host Pfeiffer University in conference play at 2:30 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
