FAIRBANKS, Alaska --- Sophomore Alyssa Munson (Summerfield, N.C.) posted a double-double with game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Kabrina Truesdale (Wilmington, N.C.) added 17 points to lead the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team to an 82-70 victory over Dominican University (Calif.) on the third and final day of the University of Alaska Fairbanks' North Star Invitational.
Lees-McRae (3-5) shot 42.1 percent from the floor in the game, including a 46.2 percent clip in the first half, while limiting Dominican (0-7) to a field goal percentage of 33.8 percent on the afternoon. The Bobcats won the battle on the glass by a 45-42 margin, including a 32-22 advantage on the defensive boards, as Lees-McRae scored 40 of its 82 points in the paint.
With the double-double, Munson finishes the three-day tournament with 58 points and 26 rebounds, which rank third and fifth, respectively, in the event's history. The sophomore forward connected on 10-of-15 attempts from the floor and 4-of-5 at the charity stripe for a game-high 24 points, adding three blocks and a contest-best 10 boards in just 25 minutes.
Kabrina Truesdale (Wilmington, N.C.) and Layana De Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) tacked on 17 and 15 points, respectively, as Truesdale tallied six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) chipped in nine rebounds and six points.
Lauren Hyatt paced the Penguins with a double-double, tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds, as Jessy Marshall added 15 points and Danielle Yamauchi dished out a game-high nine assists. Salonika Quewon-Owens posted game-highs of five steals and four blocks for the Penguins.
The Bobcats stormed out of the gate in the first half, opening the game with a 14-4 run that was capped by a three-point play from Munson at the 15:51 mark. Dominican battled back over the next six minutes, trimming the margin to 23-20 on a pair of freebies by Quewon-Owens with 9:16 to play in the half.
Lees-McRae responded with a 16-7 run, stretching the advantage to 39-27 with a Munson lay-in at the 3:48 mark, as the Bobcats carried a 40-30 lead into the intermission.
The Bobcats would maintain the double-digit margin for the duration of the second half, pushing the lead to as many as 18 points on a Truesdale bucket at the 12:44 mark, before closing out the victory with some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Bobcats travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to open Conference Carolinas play against Converse College at 5:30 p.m.
