SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Senior Kabrina Truesdale scored a game-high 22 points while senior teammate Kerri Belcher impressed with 17 points and 13 rebounds while the Lees-McRae women's basketball team thwarted Converse, 66-59, in a Conference Carolinas game Saturday afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Bobcats (3-5, 2-2 CC) saw freshman Mackenzie Blankenship (Elizabethton, Tenn.) scored in double figures for this third time this season while LMC held a 56-43 advantage on the glass. The Valkyries (1-4, 0-3) remain winless in conference play and struggled from the charity stripe with a 52.6% clip.
Belcher's (Roanoke, Va.) 17-point performance is a season-high and she has drained a three in four consecutive games.
Converse's Logan Hollis paced the team with 12 points while Yashee Johnson grabbed nine rebounds.
Truesdale (Wilmington, N.C.) connected on back-to-back jumpers, giving LMC an early 13-7 lead.
The Valkyries responded with a 7-0 run to grab their first lead of the contest with 12:22 remaining.
Tied at 26 with 5:36 on the clock, Coach Michele Williams' squad reciprocated the 7-0 run and extended it to 12 when Belcher and Truesdale were responsible for 10 of the team's final 14 points of the half.
Neither team hit a three and CC's Jakyra Washington had four steals in the first half.
The Valkyries shaved the deficit to seven, 40-33, following a Washington layup at the 14:15 mark.
The Bobcats would extend the lead to 14 after Belcher took the offense on her shoulders and scored nine consecutive points.
CC made it interesting with a pair of free throws from Christhea Mitchell to make it a four-point game, 54-50.
LMC would stave off the rally thanks to a three-point play from sophomore Kelsey Wypych (Sevierville, Tenn.) in the final two minutes.
Blankenship finished with 10 points while teammate Tayler Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) snagged eight boards.
The Bobcats return from a four-game road swing to battle Lander, Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
