Early Deficit Hampers Bobcats in Loss to Lander

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Freshman Mackenzie Blankenship dropped a season-high 15 points, but the Lees-McRae women's basketball team dropped an 85-48 decision to Lander Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.

The Bearcats (7-2) were powered by the duo of Aarika Judge and Ty'hesha Reynolds, who had 23 and 21 points, respectively. The Bobcats (3-6) knocked down six three's while senior Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

LU shot an eye-popping 72.4% from the floor in the second half while LMC impressed with a 50% clip.

A quartet of Bearcats tallied at least a point in the first seven minutes while the visitors took a commanding 15-3 lead in the first half.

Blankenship (Elizabethton, Tenn.) connected on one of her three three-pointers at the 7:13 mark to shave the deficit to nine, 20-11.

LU's lead ballooned to 17 after knocking down three of its four jumpers in a two-minute span, 35-18.

Mikayla Bennett (Erwin, Tenn.) scored her first six points of her Bobcat career in the second half, including a pair of free throws.

Blankenship caught fire and scored nine consecutive points for the Bobcats before a Tayler Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) lay up in the waning moments of the contest capped off LMC's scoring.

Senior Kabrina Truesdale (Wilmington, N.C.) had a game-high five assists and sophomore Nicole Brockington (Gastonia, N.C.) grabbed a steal and thwarted a shot in 11 minutes of action.

LMC closes out its 2014 portion of the season at Coker in Hartsville, S.C., Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m.
