BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Senior Kerri Belcher dominated in her home finale with 16 points and 13 rebounds while the Lees-McRae women's basketball team owned Converse, 68-58, in a Conference Carolinas tilt Wednesday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium in a snowy Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (6-20, 5-15 CC) knocked down seven three-pointers while Tayler Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and blocked four shots. The Valkyries (4-20, 3-17) held a +9 (47-38) advantage on the boards while Margo Dill led the way with 16 points.
With the Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Tournament coming rapidly, LMC currently holds the tiebreaker over Converse and sits ½ game up on Pfeiffer for eighth, who travels to Southern Wesleyan this evening.
Truesdale had more assists (10) than the whole Converse team (eight).
The Valkyries made a charge with a quartet of buckets to cut the deficit to 12, 32-20, but Blankenship's layup with 2:10 left in the first put LMC up 34-20 at the break.
CC struggled mightily from the floor by shooting 30% in the first half.
The Valkyries' Jakyra Washington was perfect from the line (8-for-8) and sank them all in a span of 3:24, to trim LMC's lead to eight, 49-41.
The Bobcats' Caitlin Brown (Burns, N.C.) drilled a big three at the 3:45 mark before a Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) board and bucket to help coach Michele Williams' team keep CC at bay, 60-47.
Three of the Valkyries four final baskets were from behind the arc, but efficient free throw shooting from Perez and Truesdale sealed the win.
LMC forced 22 turnovers, including five steals from Belcher.
The Bobcats travel to Pfeiffer for a crucial conference battle Saturday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. in Misenheimer, N.C.
