Women’s Basketball set to open 2016-17 season in Bristol this weekend

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team will open its 2016-17 season this weekend with a pair of games in Bristol, Tenn. LMC will kick off its season Friday evening against Mars Hill at 8 p.m. Following their matchup with the Lions, the Bobcats will take on Tusculum Saturday at 3 p.m. to round out their opening weekend of action.

Scouting the Bobcats – Lees-McRae, which went 8-21 last season, will have a wealth of experience returning to the court this season. A total of 11 players are back from the 2015-16 team, including the squad's leading scorer, Brea Forbes. In addition to Forbes, LMC also has its leading rebounder (Caitlin Brown – 7.4 rebounds per game) and distributor (Markia Stacey – 4.8 assists per game) back.

Scouting Mars Hill – The Lions were selected to finish 10th in the South Atlantic Conference's Preseason Poll. Mars Hill did finish the 2015-16 campaign with a winning record (15-13).  Ansley Ricker is one of the leaders for the Lions after finishing fourth in the conference in terms of points per game (15.8) last season. Ricker was also one of the most dangerous shooters beyond the arc connecting on 38 percent of those type of attempts in 2015-16.

Scouting Tusculum – Much like Mars Hill, the Pioneers finished last season with a record over the .500 mark (13-12). Tusculum has three of its five starters back, including Kasey Johnson (11.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg), Sydney Wilson (10.6 ppg) and Maelyn Head (9.5 ppg).
