Bobcats open conference play with a 76-68 victory over Converse

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Sparked by 15 points from Alexis Ammons and Jordan Soares, the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season Tuesday night against Converse College, 76-68. LMC improves to 1-3 and 1-0 in league play with the win, while the Valkyries move to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Both teams shot right around 50 percent from the field in the opening quarter. The difference in the stanza, however, was the sharp-shooting from Converse beyond the arc. The Valkyries drained four three-pointers, including a pair from Bri James. Behind that effort, Converse led LMC 19-14 after one quarter.

Lees-McRae closed the gap in the second quarter and it did that by diversifying its offense. Six different Bobcats scored in the frame with Taylor Fluette leading the way with five points. Thanks to this output, the Bobcats closed the deficit to just one point heading into halftime, 34-33.

Converse and Lees-McRae played to a stalemate in the third quarter, 19-19. Following the third, however, the Bobcats put together their best quarter of the contest outscoring the Valkyries, 25-19 to seal its first victory of the season.

Markia Stacey was especially important to the Bobcats' solid final quarter as she totaled seven of her 16 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. As a team, LMC shot 8-for-10 from the charity stripe in the fourth.

LMC will return to non-conference action Saturday as it travels to Harrogate, Tenn. to take on Lincoln Memorial University. The game is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
