LMC rallies but falls short at Emmanuel, 77-69

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point deficit to get within three points of Emmanuel in the fourth quarter, but the comeback came up just short as the Bobcats fell to the Lions, 77-69. LMC moves to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in league play with the loss.

Emmanuel led by as many as nine points in the opening quarter, but the Bobcats rallied to take the lead by the end of the frame, 19-18. Breanna Hardnett paced the Bobcats' offense in the first scoring eight points. Three of Hardnett's eight points were from the free throw line helping LMC go 4-for-5 from the line in the quarter.

The Lions outscored Lees-McRae 15-11 in the second quarter to regain the lead heading into halftime, 33-30. Neither team shot particularly well in the second as both shot below 39 percent. Ammons was the top scorer for Lees-McRae in the frame with five points.

The Bobcats struggled to get things rolling offensively scoring just 12 points in the stanza. EC took full advantage of LMC's cold shooting going on a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of the quarter. The Lions kept the pressure on Lees-McRae and opened a 15-point lead (52-37) with 2:50 remaining. LMC got the deficit down to 12 points heading the fourth quarter, 54-42.

Lees-McRae saved its best for last as it scored a game-high 27 points in the final quarter to get within three of the Lions on two occasions. The first came with 4:18 remaining and the second came with 26 second left on the clock. Unfortunately for LMC, that is where the comeback stalled as it ended up falling to the Lions, 77-69.

Hardnett put together her best effort of the season scoring 22 points and notched nine rebounds as well. Ammons also reached the 20-point plateau for the first time this season with 21.

Lees-McRae will return to Williams Gymnasium Saturday when it hosts Mount Olive at 2 p.m.
