Bobcats battle in Bristol but fall to Young Harris, 70-54

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team battled Wednesday afternoon in Bristol, Tenn. against Young Harris College, but came up short as it fell by a final score of 70-54. The Bobcats move to 1-8 on the year with the loss.

In the opening quarter, both teams struggled to get things going offensively. There was an almost three minute stretch where neither team scored. The duo of Meredith Tarver and Jenny Vernet combined for 12 of the team's 15 points in the quarter to help the Mountain Lions to a 15-10 lead after one quarter.

The offensive woes continued in the second for both squads. In total, 21 points were scored between the two teams. Brea Forbes knocked down three of LMC's four made field goals in the frame. The Bobcats shot just 19 percent in the second and went 0-for-11 from beyond the arc. The cold shooting by Lees-McRae allowed Young Harris to extend its lead to 26-20 going into halftime.

The Mountain Lions got some separation for Lees-McRae in the third quarter out-rebounding the Bobcats 19-3 in the quarter. YHC was especially dominant on the offensive glass collecting eight offensive rebounds in the stanza. Because of their work on the glass, the Mountain Lions were able to get the first double-digit lead of the contest going to the fourth quarter, 45-34.

Lees-McRae put forth its best quarter offensively in the fourth quarter, but foul trouble negated the Bobcats' 20-point effort in the fourth. Young Harris attempted 17 free throws in the fourth compared to just nine for LMC. YHC was also accurate with those attempts knocking down 13 shots from the charity stripe. The work from the line was enough to close out the Bobcats by a final score of 70-54.

Individually, Breana Hardnett led the Bobcats with 15 points. Fellow sophomore Markia Stacey chipped in 14 points, while Martha Mastin put forth her best performance of the season with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and eight rebounds.

LMC will return to the court Dec. 31 when it travels to take on University of Virginia's College at Wise. Tip-off is set for noon.
